You wake up to your alarm, not feeling rested but not having the option to sleep in. You race out the door, grab your first coffee of the day and before you’re even to your desk, the day has already begun as you check your email on your phone.

Team meetings… Emails requiring answers… Requests from clients… Fires to put out…

Lunch is whatever is quickest and most available. In your rush to get through it, you overeat and by mid-afternoon your energy is shot. Your turn to more coffee or a sugar hit from the vending machine to keep you going.

No time for the gym after work because you’ve got a dinner with clients. Restaurant-sized portions with vegetables few and far between and a few more drinks than you really needed on a Tuesday.

Instead of going to bed when you get home, you start reading emails, putting your mind back into working mode. Before you know it, it’s after midnight and you’re wide awake. When you finally do drift off to sleep, it’s only a few short hours until you wake up to start all over again.

The thing is, you don’t have to live like this. There is another way. A better way. A way that gives you the ability to thrive in your busy life -- no matter what.

And that’s building wellness in and taking the sabotaging behaviors out.

So, what does wellness mean?

Maybe it makes you think of green juice, zen monks and spandex-sporting weekend cyclists.

The truth is, wellness encompasses so much more than skipping dessert, running a marathon or juicing.

My approach to wellness is holistic — meaning that I believe your health and your quality of life are driven by the whole picture of your day-to-day habits and experiences:

  • What you eat, how much you move your body, how hydrated you stay throughout the day.
  • How much stress you experience on a daily basis and what actions you take (constructive or not) to alleviate that stress.
  • How well you sleep — getting to sleep, staying asleep, and the quality of that sleep — and how that impacts your levels of energy and mental clarity.
  • How happy you are in your job, your relationships, and your hobbies and passions outside of work.
  • How connected you are to your family, your spouse, your kids, friends and community.
  • Whether or not you feel a sense of spiritual satisfaction and peace.
